The Native Fish Society is seeking a North Oregon Coast District Coordinator

Position Overview

The Native Fish Society (NFS) is a nonprofit organization based in Oregon City, Oregon. Guided by the best available science, Native Fish Society advocates for the recovery of wild, native fish and promotes the stewardship of the habitats that sustain them. NFS believes that no effort for wild fish protection and recovery is stronger or more effective than those initiated and sustained by local communities. To that end, much of the NFS mission is fulfilled through its signature River Steward Program, which supports 88 River Stewards who safeguard over 4,000 river miles and 100,000 square miles of watersheds throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and northern California.

The River Steward Program is a grassroots, all-volunteer conservation network throughout the Pacific Northwest that helps solve the root causes of fish decline and stop threats before they happen. These local advocates are the boots-on-the-ground voices for wild, native fish in their homewaters. In the past year our stewards mobilized federal agencies to undertake habitat restoration, protected Oregon’s essential salmon habitat from suction dredge mining, and helped designate wild fish sanctuaries throughout the Pacific Northwest.

As our River Steward Program grows, we’re hiring District Coordinators to lead our local grassroots advocates in their campaigns. The Native Fish Society is now seeking a North Oregon Coast District Coordinator based on Oregon’s North Coast to spearhead a campaign to improve logging practices on unstable slopes. The Coordinator will work with River Stewards based in the Siletz, Nehalem, Salmon, and other Northern Oregon Coast rivers.

The North Oregon Coast Coordinator will be hired by the Native Fish Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as a contract position. This grant-contingent contract position is currently funded for one year with potential for renewal upon availability of further funding and performance.

The duties of the North Oregon Coast District Coordinator include:

  • Lead campaign to improve forest practices on unstable slopes
  • Oversee and collaborate with River Stewards in the watersheds of the North Oregon Coast
    • Coordinate 3 meetings per year with the area’s River Stewards
    • Convey information between the Program Director and River Stewards
  • Help recruit new River Stewards in the following basins:
    • Kilches River

  • Report to the River Steward Program Director on a monthly basis regarding the latest activities and work accomplished.
  • Develop campaign plan with River Steward Program Director and River Stewards
  • Develop content for campaign webpage to educate our members and supporters
  • Write campaign update articles for our online media and bi-annual newsletter
  • Host an action alert to send comments into decision-makers.

Desired Qualifications/Attributes

  • Experience in environmental advocacy, fisheries sciences, social sciences, marketing, fundraising or other relevant subject area.
  • Experience working in a collaborative setting and demonstrated partnership building in the Northern Oregon Coast District
  • Well-organized with excellent communications skills, including oral and writing.
  • Good people skills and ability to communicate with diverse audiences across different backgrounds.
  • Experience working in rural areas/extraction industry dependent communities, and with natural resource agencies to develop and implement grassroots campaigns.

  • Ability to work independently to establish priorities and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and hiking on uneven terrain.

Compensation

This is a part time, contract position, compensated on a monthly basis at $333.33. We anticipate the coordinator will work with the Program Director to identify additional funding opportunities to support the position and additional NFS campaigns and may pursue other fundraising, such as grants, for further compensation.
